You have to be Followed by an author on the FP to be out of the gray. Many posts on the FP don't come from Jalopnik, so that may be why you are gray and not gray.

If a Jezebel post is shared to the FP, you will be in the gray, unless you are Followed by Jezebel.

Ps, if you are out of the grays on the FP, don't get in to an argument with an author, you will be sent back to the grays.

All I can tell you is I asked Matt directly and was granted such freedom. This was several years ago and the volume of requests has probably risen significantly. You certainly have a good track record of posts/comments so don't give up.
